The United States Flag
The flag of the United States, also known as the Stars and Stripes, consists of thirteen horizontal red and white stripes and a blue field in the upper left corner with fifty white, five-pointed stars.
The thirteen red and white stripes represent the thirteen original colonies that declared independence from Great Britain in 1776. The fifty white stars on the blue field represent the 50 states of the United States.
The flag has gone through several changes since it was first adopted in 1777. The number of stars and stripes has changed several times to reflect the addition of new states to the union.
The current design, which has been in use since July 4, 1960, has 50 stars, one for each state, and 13 stripes, representing the original colonies.
