Cyprus Flag
The flag has been officially recognized by the government of the Republic of Cyprus since the country's independence in 1960. It is based on a design that was chosen after a competition was held to find a suitable symbol for the newly independent nation. The flag consists of a white field with a copper-orange map of the island in the center, with two olive branches below it.
The white color represents peace, while the map represents the island as a whole and the olive branches represent the desire for peace between the Greek and Turkish Cypriot communities. The copper-orange color of the map represents the island's rich deposits of copper ore, which may have contributed to the name “Cyprus.” The flag is used by both the government and the general public as a symbol of national pride and unity.
