Russia Flag
The Russian national flag, also known as the Russian Federation's State Flag, is a tricolor flag with three horizontal fields: white on top, blue in the middle, and red on the bottom. In 1696, the flag was initially used as an ensign for Russian commerce ships.
It was used until 1858, when Alexander II established the first official flag of the Russian Empire, a tricolor consisting of black on top, yellow in the middle, and white on the bottom. However, until the Russian Revolution of 1917, the white, blue, and red tricolor was reinstalled as the official flag of the Russian Empire in 1896.
The Russian tricolor was abolished upon the establishment of the Russian Socialist Federative Soviet Republic during the Bolshevik Revolution, but its use was continued by the White Movement and the Russian state during the Russian Civil War. During the Soviet Union's existence, the red flag with a golden hammer and sickle and a golden bordered red star on top was used, while the Russian SFSR (a constituent republic of the USSR) used a variation with a vertical blue bar at the hoist.
Following the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991, the Russian SFSR adopted a new flag design that was similar to the pre-revolutionary tricolor, with white on top, blue in the middle, and red on the bottom. The traditional Russian tricolor was restored as the current national flag in 1993.
