Panama Flag
The Panamanian national flag was designed by Mara de la Ossa de Amador and was officially recognized by legislation in 1925. The flag is made up of four horizontally placed rectangles in blue, red, blue, and red. Within the red rectangles is a white star surrounded by a blue field with white five-pointed stars grouped in the manner of the Southern Cross constellation.
The blue and red quarters are thought to symbolise rivalry between Panama's two largest political parties, the Conservatives and the Liberals, while the white star signifies peace. The annual National Flag Day is held on November 4th, one day after the anniversary of Panama's independence from Colombia.
