Netherlands flag

The Dutch national flag is a horizontal tricolor of red, white, and blue. The current design is based on the late 16th century orange-white-blue Prinsenvlag (“Prince's Flag”) and the early 17th century red-white-blue Statenvlag (“States Flag”), which was the naval flag of the Dutch Republic's States-General. This makes the Dutch flag one of the oldest tricolor flags still in use today.

The flag represents the transition from monarchy to republic, and it inspired many other tricolor flags, notably the Russian flag and the French tricolor, which was adopted following the French Revolution in 1789.

During the 1930s economic crisis, the ancient Prince's Flag with the color orange gained some appeal among some individuals, but on February 19, 1937, the colors red, white, and blue, as well as its formal status as the national flag of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, were reaffirmed by Royal Decree.
