Chile Flag
The flag of Chile consists of two horizontal bands of equal height, white and red, with a blue square in the canton (upper left corner) that is the same height as the white band. The blue square bears a white five-pointed star in the center. The flag has a 3:2 ratio between length and width and is part of the stars and stripes flag family.
The white band represents the snow-covered Andes mountains, the red represents the blood spilled to achieve independence, and the blue represents the sky and the Pacific Ocean. The white star in the blue square represents Venus, which was significant to the country's indigenous Mapuche people, symbolizing a guide to progress and honor.
It is also said to represent an independent state. The flag of Chile was adopted on 18 October 1817 and is known in Spanish as La Estrella Solitaria, or The Lone Star. Flag Day is celebrated on 9 July each year to commemorate the 77 soldiers who died in the 1882 Battle of La Concepción.
The colors of the flag are said to have been derived from the flag flown by the Mapuche during the Arauco War, according to the epic poem La Araucana.
