Mexico Flag
Mexico's national flag, popularly known as the Mexican tricolor, consists of three vertical stripes of green, white, and red. The national coat of arms is boldly placed in the center of the white stripe. Throughout the country's history, these colors have been interpreted in various ways, but they have remained a symbol of Mexican independence from Spain since the country's War of Independence and the First Mexican Empire.
The colors of the national flag are also related with the colors of the national army in modern Mexican heritage. The major insignia of the flag, the Mexican coat of arms, is based on the Aztec symbol for Tenochtitlan, the Aztec Empire's old capital city. The coat of arms was inspired by a narrative about an eagle sitting on a cactus devouring a serpent, which was thought to be a sign to the Aztecs to establish their city.
