South Georgia Flag
When the territory was established on October 3, 1985, the flag of South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands (SGSSI) was officially awarded. Prior to that, the territory was administered as a dependency of the Falkland Islands and flew the same flag.
On February 14, 1992, the arms of South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands were given by royal warrant. Following the issuance of the arms, the administration of SGSSI began using them on the British Blue Ensign, as is traditional for British dependencies.
The badge of the arms shows a shield consisting of white and blue lozenges, on a green pile is a golden lion rampant, armed and tongue in red, holding a torch lit in red, and in chief two golden estoiles and it has a reindeer crest, with fur seal and macaroni penguin as supporters, with the motto “Leo Terram Propriam Protegat” meaning “Let the lion protect its own land”.
